Ohio State University's James Cancer Hospital and Nationwide Children's Hospital will split the cost of a $100 million proton therapy center as part of Ohio State's outpatient complex being designed for west campus.
The project revives a project that Ohio State walked away from a decade ago, but now at one-half to one-third the cost.
Proton therapy would take up 55,000 square feet of the planned 340,000-square-foot outpatient campus of Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center. The treatment precisely aims a beam of protons instead of radiation at tumor cells. It requires no incision, minimizes damage to adjacent tissue and doesn't have the same side effects as radiation.
