Herrick, Cannon Closures and CABS Impacts

Updated: September 27, 2023

Traffic Impacts

  • From 8 p.m. on October 4 through 5 a.m. on October 5, Herrick Drive between the Transit Hub and Lincoln Tower will be reduced to one lane, two-way traffic as roadway preparations occur for the Cannon and Herrick intersection  / Herrick bridge opening.
  • When the intersection and Herrick bridge open at 5 a.m. on October 5, Cannon between Herrick and Lincoln Tower will close. View phasing maps. Access to the Lincoln Tower loading dock will be maintained from the north. As early as October 9, parking spaces located around the Lincoln Tower moat will be closed. From October 12 to 14, the Lincoln loading dock will be closed completely.
  • Southbound Cannon Drive traffic from Woody Hayes Drive will be rerouted north on Tuttle Park Place, west on Lane Avenue and south on Olentangy River Road. Detour signs will be in place. Major travel delays are anticipated in the area as motorists become familiar with new traffic patterns. All are encouraged to plan ahead and allow additional time for travel.
  • Cannon Drive closures north of Herrick will continue through 2024.

CABS Impacts Beginning Thursday, October 5

  • Campus Loop South (CLS) will use Olentangy River Road between the Buckeye Lots and the Herrick Drive Transit Hub and will not service the Midwest Campus eastbound, St. John Arena eastbound or Drake Union stops. Current CLS passengers traveling from the Buckeye Lots to Midwest Campus or St. John eastbound should use the Buckeye Express (BE) route. Riders are encouraged to use the Ohio State app for real-time CABS tracking.
  • CABS On-Demand will continue to provide service to the Mid-Towers stop.
  • The Med Center Express (MC) will resume service along John Herrick Drive.
  • The Ackerman Shuttle will no longer service the Biomedical Research Tower (Tower) stop and instead will service the Davis Heart and Lung as well as the Doan Hall stop on 12th Avenue.

Olentangy Trail Impacts

  • The Olentangy Trail detour will shift near Herrick Drive and Cannon Drive, with the detour moving to the west side of Cannon Drive between Herrick Drive and 12th Avenue. The reroute will remain in place through the end of 2023. View phasing maps.

Parking Impacts

  • As early as October 9, parking spaces located around the Lincoln Tower moat will be closed. From October 12 to 14, the Lincoln loading dock will be closed completely.

EMS Impacts

  • On October 5 at approximately 5 a.m., EMS access will be restored from the north and west via the John Herrick Bridge to Cannon Drive to 12th Avenue.

The closures are part of the Cannon Drive Relocation – Phase 2 project which will add up to 500-year flood protection for the Columbus campus.

Please note: The intersection is currently scheduled to reopen pending weather and roadway conditions. Updates will be posted online.
