Work on the Biomedical and Materials Engineering Complex (BMEC) Phase 2 is passing the halfway point, at nearly 53% complete. Crews are preparing to pour the second interior stairwell and then will be able to remove the exterior temporary set. Crews are also working on installing mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) hangers throughout the building.
Construction progress includes:
- Pouring concrete in several locations in the coming days.
- Installing MEP hangers, above ceiling and wall rough-ins.
- Digging to install footers.
- Air handler installed on roof.
BMEC Phase 2 is a $94.3 million project that included the demolition of Watts Hall and renovates existing MacQuigg Hall while adding an addition which will house research and teaching labs, collaboration spaces, offices and classroom spaces. BMEC Phase 1, later renamed Mars G. Fontana Laboratories, opened in August 2020.
