With more than 17,000 trees on the Columbus campus, green space and the overall tree canopy are important aspects of Ohio State’s landscape architecture. Facilities Operations and Development Landscape Services regularly plants trees to support sustainability and campus beautification. When a tree must be removed, multiple replacement trees often pop up as a result.

Cannon Phase 2 - Multiple Travel Impacts Near Morrill, Lincoln Towers
Preparations for the Cannon Drive Relocation – Phase 2 project continue. Beginning January 30, fencing installation north of Herrick begins. Cannon Drive sidewalks near Lincoln and north of Morrill will close. Alternate pathways east of the towers are available. The Olentangy Trail will be detoured to the lower path with local trail access just south of Drake. The Lincoln parking lot closes permanently and select spaces in the mid-Tower lot will be closed through the end of March 2023. Alternate ADA parking will be available in the mid-Tower lot.

Cannon Drive Relocation – Phase 2 will rebuild the roadway between John Herrick Drive and Woody Hayes Drive to construct a certified ODNR flood protection levee. Area landscaping, including tree removal along the Olentangy Trail, has begun in order to make way for the levee.
Cannon Drive Relocation – Phase 2 Update
Cannon Drive Relocation – Phase 2 construction will begin in January 2023. The project will rebuild the roadway between John Herrick Drive and Woody Hayes Drive and construct a certified ODNR flood protection levee. Facilities Operations and Development’s Tom Ekegren discusses how the work adds up to 500-year flood protection for the Columbus campus.

Cannon Drive Relocation – Phase 2 aligns with the Framework plan, and continues the work of Cannon Drive – Phase 1, which created a certified flood levee between King Avenue and John Herrick Drive. Phase 2 will continue that work northbound by rebuilding the roadway between John Herrick Drive and Woody Hayes Drive.

In the News: Cannon Phase Two Begins in January, CHP Updates
Columbus Business First recently highlighted major construction updates occurring on Ohio State's Columbus campus. Among those include the naming of MasTec as the new contractor for the Combined Heat and Power Plant. In addition, Cannon Drive Phase Two, kicks off in January 2023. The project will rebuild the roadway between John Herrick Drive and Woody Hayes Drive at its current elevation and construct a certified ODNR flood protection levee.
In the News: Construction Phasing and Transportation Service Changes
As highlighted in The Lantern, the Cannon Drive Relocation - Phase 2 project phasing - which rebuilds Cannon Drive between John Herrick and Woody Hayes drives has been revised so bus route impacts will be delayed until fall 2023. Based on these updates as well as customer feedback, Ohio State's Campus Area Bus Service (CABS) reworked routes to resume service along Cannon Drive, servicing th Mid-Towers stop.
In the News: Lower Olentangy Trail to Remain Closed
As shared in The Lantern, the Lower Olentangy Trail is closed until January 2023 for the second phase of the Cannon Drive Relocation Project. Additional roadway and trail closures will occur beginning in 2023 and will continue through the end of 2024.
