The inpatient hospital project reached a major milestone in January. Concrete was recently poured on level 22 of the north and south elevator cores of facility, making it the tallest building on all of the Ohio State campuses. The north and south elevator towers will eventually reach level 25 which will be used for mechanical and support spaces. Level 24 will be the final patient care floor.
The center, or middle, elevator core, will contain a total of eight staff elevators and a total of twelve public elevators. This core will eventually top out at level 27, and it will serve as a new helipad.
Sixty ironworkers are onsite to erect steel, which includes significant welding activities on the steel columns. Depending on the size of the column, these welds can take more than a full day to complete. Each column is then inspected by a third-party certified welding inspector. In total, the facility will use 15,000 tons of steel.
Construction crews continue to place concrete floor slabs. The ground and level one slabs are complete, partial slabs have been placed at the lower level, level two and level four. Rough-in work continues on electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems and wall framing has begun.
The inpatient hospital is the largest single facilities project ever undertaken at Ohio State. Once completed, it will be the 10th tallest building in Columbus, Ohio.
