  • An up-close shot of a stairwell where a crew member can be seen walking.
An exterior view of a stairwell where crews are installing new addition footers and a foundation wall.
  • Large steel rods are seen drilled into the ground inside a large hole in the dirt.
A view of a concrete pier, which runs 30 feet deep into the ground to ensure a strong building foundation.
  • Another view of the concrete piers. This is an up-close shot where you can see large steel rods drilled into a hole in the dirt filled with cement.

Construction on the Biomedical and Materials Engineering Complex (BMEC) Phase 2 is about 45% complete as crews recently finished installing the final concrete piers. The focus is now on ensuring a strong foundation with footers and a foundation wall. Construction on the north and south connectors from Mars G. Fontana Laboratories to MacQuigg Hall is underway and taking shape.

    Construction progress includes:

    • Crews completed installation of concrete piers.
    • Priority walls are going up.
    • Level one duct work is beginning.
    • Crews are beginning to install hangars on second level.
    • Crews are beginning to lay out wall studs on second level.
    • Crews are working to complete an exterior mockup for others to use for reference as the project progresses.

BMEC Phase 2 is a $94.3 million project that included the demolition of Watts Hall and renovates existing MacQuigg Hall. It will be the home of first-year engineering courses, makerspace, biomedical and advanced materials R&D and engaging K-12 STEM programs.
