Work on the Wexner Medical Center Inpatient Hospital is progressing with deep foundations being installed along the east edge of the site and basement concrete walls under construction. Excavation for the underground tunnel that will extend from the Inpatient Hospital to 12th Avenue is wrapping up in preparation for concrete pours that will form the tunnel. The Inpatient Hospital is scheduled to open in early 2026.

Demolition of the above ground portion of the North and South Cannon Garages was completed in early March 2021. The new Inpatient Hospital foundation work continues upward, with the first structural deck concrete pour occurring March 4. Construction on the 1.9 million-square-feet hospital began in fall 2020 and is the largest single facilities project ever undertaken at Ohio State.

As reported by the newspaper, Ohio State is seeking approval from the board of trustees for the construction of a $1.79 billion, 1.9 million-square-foot hospital tower. Pending trustees’ approval, the facility is expected to open in early 2026.

University takes next step with new inpatient hospital

After extensive planning, the largest single facilities project ever undertaken at The Ohio State University seeks Board of Trustees approval this week. At 1.9 million-square-feet, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Inpatient Hospital will enhance leading-edge research, clinical training and world-class patient care. This is the next step in the university’s long-term Framework 2.0 planning and the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center strategic plan.

In the News: Paz Discusses Inpatient Hospital

Dr. Hal Paz, OSU executive vice president and chancellor for health affairs and medical center CEO, recently sat down with Columbus Business First to discuss many topics including ongoing construction plans for the Wexner Medical Center Inpatient Tower.

"One lesson we've all learned is that you need inpatient facilities," Paz said.

As written by Business First, about 430 of the tower's rooms would replace existing beds while 390 rooms will represent an expansion.
