Construction on the largest single facilities project ever undertaken at Ohio State is approximately 40% complete. The building features large windows in patient rooms providing natural light, and a view of the Olentangy River. Standing at 410-feet tall, when complete, the inpatient hospital will be the 10th tallest building in Columbus.

In the News: Inpatient Hospital Grows to $1.9B Project

Progress continues at the Wexner Medical Center inpatient hospital project. Columbus Business First recently shared an update on project enhancements, including the news that 120 rooms initially planned as "shell" sturctures would instead be finished on the interior to help avoid disrupting patient care.

The 1.9 million-square-foot inpatient hospital is the largest single facilities project ever undertaken at Ohio State and will elevate patient-centered care, safety and training for the next generation of health care providers.

Drivers on SR-315 cannot miss views of an expanding Wexner Medical Center inpatient hospital project. Lower levels have exterior glass in place on the building located just south of Cannon Drive. The size and scale of the project are starting to come into view with structural steel erection substantially complete through level 23 with metal decking.

The main entrance to the Wexner Medical Center inpatient hospital is taking shape as steel framing continues in preparation for glass installation. Structural steel is up to level 15 and the concrete structure of the middle elevator tower is approaching level 25. The 1.9 million-square-foot hospital is the largest single facilities project ever undertaken at Ohio State.

Precast brick panels are being installed on the north façade of the Wexner Medical Center inpatient hospital, dramatically changing the building appearance. The overall project will include both precast panels as well as traditional “hand-laid” brick for portions of the exterior. The 1.9 million-square-foot hospital began construction in fall 2020 and is expected to open in early 2026.

Inpatient Hospital Becomes Tallest Building at Ohio State

The inpatient hospital project reached a major milestone in January. Concrete was recently poured on level 22 of the north and south elevator cores of facility, making it the tallest building on all of the Ohio State campuses. The north and south elevator towers will eventually reach level 25 which will be used for mechanical and support spaces. Level 24 will be the final patient care floor.

It’s a race to the sky, with north and south elevator core concrete rising past level 18. The center, or middle, elevator core and stairwell B, is the largest and tallest of the cores, encompassing twenty elevators and extending to the helipad to an elevation of 410 feet above grade.
